About CCUWBee

Background

  • CCUWBee was created in 2017

  • We decided to make campus bee friendly using specific plant species and creating habitats

  • We use protocols adapted from Xerces Society and non-destructive citizen science methods

Focus

  • Our efforts focus on supporting the native pollinator populations and habitats across campus

  • Measure relative abundance and species richness of native bees

  • Enhance floral resources and nesting sites on campus

Goals

  • Provide the campus community with knowledge on local bee populations

  • Improve bee habitats on campus

  • Inspire students and faculty to be involved using a citizen science approach

What we do

Support the Bees

We provide facilities with information about the bees to hopefully influence their choice of plants and mowing techniques. The data collected is used to determine how to enhance floral resources and nesting habitats.

Educate

Using citizen science methods, we spread awareness to the general public by inviting students and staff to participate in our research initiative.

Count Bees

We collect data on the abundance and diversity of bees, focusing on specific plant species. Surveys take place as early as March until late September.

Take Photos

We use non-destructive methods to conduct research. One of the methods used to collect data include taking photos! This also allows anyone who owns anything that can snap a photo to be involved with the research.
